Death sentence for uncle who was asked by his nephew to 'carry' a large amount of drugs
(Baonghean.vn) - The nephew hired to transport drugs, Hoang Van Sam (residing in Do Luong, Nghe An) agreed. While transporting more than 3.5 kg of various drugs, Sam was arrested.
On August 24, Nghe An Provincial People's Court opened a first-instance criminal trial of Hoang Van Sam (born 1975), residing in Trung Son commune, Do Luong district, for the crime of "Illegal transportation of drugs".
According to the investigation agency's documents, at around 10:30 a.m. on February 15, 2020, Hoang Van Sam received a phone call from Luong Van Hoang (born in 1991), residing in Chau Binh commune, Quy Chau district, the son of Sam's sister, saying: "Someone asked me to transport some things but I couldn't go. Can you go?". Sam agreed and asked "what kind of goods, where to transport them, how much is the fee?", then the nephew said "the fee is from 10 to 15 million VND, just go, someone will guide you".

At around 2:00 p.m. the same day, Sam rode his motorbike to Ke Ninh bridge, Chau Hanh commune (Quy Chau) and saw a car overtake Sam's car, slow down, and signal. Thinking it was Hoang's car, Sam went over. The person sitting in the car rolled down the window and gave Sam two bags of stuff.
When Sam called Hoang, he was told: “The white plastic bag contains food, and the cloth bag contains money. You just go and deliver it to them.”
During the move, Sam continuously contacted the recipient to get the delivery location.
In Tien Phong commune, Que Phong district, Sam gave 2 bags of goods to a stranger and received 1 bag containing clay candles and opium. This person told Sam to take the bag of goods to Nghia Dan district and someone would pay him.
When Hoang Van Sam arrived at Chau Binh commune, Quy Chau district, he was arrested by the police. The seized evidence was 2,230.12 grams of methamphetamine, 354.7 grams of heroin and 983.5 grams of ketamine.
In court, defendant Sam confessed and admitted all his crimes. Sam said he agreed because his nephew hired him to transport the goods. “I did not expect there to be so many drugs. I am very remorseful for what I did.” When the prosecutor proposed the death penalty, the defendant asked for a chance to live and start over.
The panel of judges determined that the defendant's actions were particularly dangerous to society. For the sake of profit, the defendant participated in transporting drugs in particularly large quantities.
Although the defendant had some mitigating circumstances such as honest confession and family contributions to the revolution, but with the large amount of drugs, the court sentenced Hoang Van Sam to death for the crime of Illegally transporting drugs.
Regarding the man named Hoang, during the process of working with the authorities, Hoang did not admit to hiring Sam to transport drugs. Therefore, the investigation agency does not have enough grounds to handle the case, when there is enough evidence, it will be handled later.
