Jailed for beating debtors and robbing property
(Baonghean.vn) - Hao borrowed 5 million VND from Hoa, promising to pay him back in 30 minutes. When the due date came and he still hadn't paid, Hoa used a three-section stick to beat the victim, causing him to have his spleen removed.
On September 9, Nghe An Provincial People's Court opened a first-instance criminal trial to try Nguyen Dinh Hoa (born 1994), residing in Hoi Son commune, Anh Son district, for the crime of"Robbery".
The case file shows that at 4:00 p.m. on March 10, 2020, Nguyen Dinh Hao called Hoa to borrow 5 million VND, promising to pay back 30 minutes later. Because they were friends and acquaintances, Hoa agreed. That same evening, Hoa called Hao to get the borrowed money, but Hao did not answer.

At 7 p.m., Hoa took a three-section metal stick to Hao's house to look for him but couldn't find him. Then, Hoa asked his friend Manh to take him to see Hao. As soon as he saw Hao, Hoa stopped the car, used the three-section stick to hit Hao repeatedly, and asked, "Where is my money?" Being beaten, Hao covered his face with his hands, bowed, and said, "Wait, I have this money, but it's not enough." While speaking, Hao took out 750,000 VND from his pocket.
After that, Hao took out his phone to call his friend to ask him to bring money to pay Hoa, but Hoa snatched his phone and robbed him of 750,000 VND.
At 11pm the same day, Hao asked his friend to bring 4.4 million VND to pay Hoa. After handing over the money, the friend asked Hoa to return the money and phone to Hao, but Hoa refused because "he had not paid enough".
That night, Hao complained of stomach pain and was taken to the hospital by his family. Hao then had his entire spleen removed, leaving him with a 36% health loss. On April 16, 2020, Hao filed a police report. Nguyen Dinh Hoa was later arrested.
At the trial, the defendant admitted all his crimes. The defendant said that because Hao borrowed money but did not pay it back on time, he beat someone.
The victim asked the defendant to pay 30 million VND for medicine and mental and health support. At the same time, he asked for a reduced sentence for the defendant.
The panel of judges determined that the defendant’s criminal behavior was hooliganism, and the total amount of property that Hoa robbed from Hao was nearly 2 million VND. Considering the entire case, the court sentenced Nguyen Dinh Hoa to 12 years in prison for robbery. Regarding the civil part, the defendant was required to compensate 30 million VND (minus 10 million VND already compensated) to the victim.
