Australia has called on China to apologize for a fake Twitter photo posted on the page of Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian, as reported by ABC News.

Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison.

It refers to the publication of a photograph, which allegedly depicts an Australian soldier holding a knife to a child's throat. The photo is captioned: "Don't worry, we bring peace!" Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison demanded an apology: He said the photo was fake and called for it to be removed.

"This is unacceptable and cannot be justified in any way. The Chinese government should be ashamed of this post," Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison said.

He added that Australia-China relations were indeed strained, but such publications "would not solve the problem" between the countries.

The event comes amid investigations into war crimes committed by Australians in the war in Afghanistan.
