In the face of the complicated developments of the Covid-19 epidemic, in addition to coordinating with other forces to control the epidemic in the border gate area, officers and soldiers of the Nam Can International Border Guard Station have stepped up strict control of the border area under the station's management; stepped up coordination with all levels and sectors of the district and commune in propagating and mobilizing people, reaching every village, every household, every person in the area to participate in epidemic prevention and control.

patrolling awake

On the night of December 31, 2020, at the 4th Covid-19 prevention and control checkpoint, Nam Can International Border Guard Station, after dinner, the officers and soldiers here again thoroughly grasped and deployed the night patrol and control mission. At this time, the outdoor temperature was below 7 degrees Celsius. The checkpoint was located right next to the border, in the middle of the valley, and the thick fog covered the place, making it even colder...

It has been almost a year since checkpoint 4 was established. This last night of the year is just like any other night before. The border guards here have never neglected their duties for a moment. They march silently to protect sovereignty, prevent all kinds of crimes as well as the risk of Covid-19 epidemic infiltration. These nightly patrols and controls on the border posts and checkpoints are very necessary. Because criminals and illegal immigrants often take advantage of the dark night, complex terrain, and unfavorable weather to infiltrate the interior. The roads are slippery, the streams and ravines are rolling with many dangers, but the officers and soldiers still move forward, holding firm and tightening the border. The light is before their eyes and the darkness is behind them. More than anyone else, the border guards are fully aware of the risk of the epidemic and their noble responsibility to "stay awake so that the people can sleep peacefully".

Captain Nguyen Canh Thao - Head of the Mass Mobilization Team, Head of Checkpoint 4 of Nam Can International Border Post said: "Since the beginning of the year, Checkpoint 4 for Covid-19 prevention and control, Nam Can International Border Post has arrested 4 cases/7 subjects from Laos illegally entering the country through Nam Can stream, fined and sent to medical quarantine according to regulations... As we get closer to the end of the year, we determine that the risk of illegal entry is getting higher. Officers and soldiers at the checkpoint have been, are and will be increasing their duty at the checkpoint, patrolling and guarding 24 hours a day, not letting any subjects or risks escape."

After a hard night patrol, the officers and soldiers returned to their posts to rest before starting the next patrol. Comrades gathered around the fire to chat, turned on the FM radio and listened to their rear happily welcoming the new year with joy and pride in having contributed to creating peace. Lieutenant Dinh Bat Hao confided: “At the beginning of last year, when the Covid-19 epidemic broke out, my teammates and I were here for 4-5 months on duty without returning home. This year, we don't know what will happen, but my family and I are determined to stay at our posts, carry out our assigned tasks well, firmly protect the border, and prevent the epidemic from entering.”

Determined to do the job well

At the border gate on the first morning of the year, due to the impact of the Covid-19 epidemic, the number of people passing through and goods clearing customs was low. However, the border control force was always on duty, ensuring all activities took place smoothly. Officers and soldiers of the Nam Can International Border Gate Border Guard Station checked cargo vehicles passing through the border gate; checked the identity and luggage of drivers entering the transit area, changing people... On the last day of the year and the first day of the new year, the Nam Can International Border Gate Border Guard Station and border quarantine completed entry procedures and quarantined 14 people from Laos returning to Vietnam. The total number of people entering and quarantined in the past year was 5,982.

The officers and soldiers of the Nam Can International Border Guard Station still face the risk of infection every day, but they do not falter. Lieutenant Colonel Trinh Van Que - Political Commissar of the Nam Can International Border Guard Station shared: In preventing and fighting the Covid-19 epidemic, the border guard force has become a wall and an outpost to prevent danger. In addition to coordinating with other forces to control the epidemic in the border gate area, in the past time, the station has comprehensively, synchronously and drastically deployed measures to prevent and fight the Covid-19 epidemic at the highest level, with 100% of the military participating, in accordance with the Ministry of Health's 5K Message "Mask - Disinfection - Distance - No gathering - Declaration".

Accordingly, the unit has set up 6 Covid-19 prevention and control posts on border trails according to the decision of the Provincial Border Guard Command; organized patrols and strictly controlled the border areas under the post's management; promoted coordination with all levels and sectors of the district and commune in propagating and mobilizing people, to each village, each household, each person in the area to participate in epidemic prevention and control in many different forms and methods. The forms of propaganda are through people's meetings, loudspeaker systems, social networks, mobile and individual propaganda. The post uses the common languages, Thai, Mong and Kho Mu so that all people can listen, understand and properly implement the instructions and directions.

Lieutenant Colonel Trinh Van Que said: Thanks to the promotion of propaganda and mobilization, people have highly supported and provided the unit with 45 sources of information on illegal entry and exit cases. As a result, the station has arrested and handled 50 cases/7 subjects of illegal entry and exit, of which 47 cases/70 subjects were administratively handled, fined 220 million VND; 3 cases/7 subjects were warned; 1 case/1 subject was arrested and administratively handled for transporting medical supplies for epidemic prevention and control through the border gate; 1 case/1 subject was prosecuted for organizing illegal entry and 1 case/2 subjects were organized for others to illegally escape abroad.

Despite many efforts and achievements, at this time, officers and soldiers of the Nam Can International Border Post cannot be complacent. Because at any time, any moment, there is a risk of Covid-19 entering the country. The lesson of 6 illegal immigrants from Myanmar carrying Covid-19 through the southwestern border area is still present... It is forecasted that from now until Lunar New Year, the number of immigrants and the situation of illegal immigration will increase sharply and become more complicated. Lieutenant Colonel Trinh Van Que affirmed: “Being fully aware of the risk of the epidemic to each individual as well as their family and community, officers and soldiers of the Nam Can International Border Guard Station have anticipated all the difficulties and made detailed plans to effectively carry out the task of preventing and fighting the Covid-19 epidemic, fighting and preventing all types of crimes on the border, especially crimes of transporting and consuming firecrackers, drug crimes, illegal immigration and emigration, smuggling and trade fraud on the border routes...”.
