Jakarta, Indonesia's capital, submerged in floodwaters, thousands of people evacuated

Recent seasonal rains have caused flooding in the Indonesian capital Jakarta and parts of West Java island.

The South China Morning Post (SCMP) quoted officials as sayingIndonesiaHeavy rains have caused floodwaters to breach several embankments along the Citarum River, forcing 4,000 people in Karawang city on West Java island to flee their homes.

Meanwhile, in the capital Jakarta and some neighboring cities, the inkwaterfloodmeasured in many areas rose to 1.8 meters. Jakarta authorities on February 22 had to evacuate at least 1,700 people living in many affected areas to safety.
