The number of deaths from Covid-19 in the US exceeded half a million on February 22. This number is equivalent to the total number of American soldiers killed in the three major wars the country has participated in.

According to statistics from Johns Hopkins University, half a million people in the US have died from Covid-19 and this number is expected to increase to 589,000 by early June. The number of deaths in the US from Covid-19 is equivalent to the number of American soldiers killed in World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War.

The US has the highest number of Covid-19 deaths in the world, accounting for 20% of the global total of 2.5 million. The number of new cases and deaths per day in the US has been falling in recent weeks, although the death toll from Covid-19 remains at 1,900 a day. However, health experts warn that this downward trend could be reversed with the emergence of new variants and say that not enough Americans have been vaccinated for the vaccines to be truly effective in controlling the disease.

The recent decline in new infections and deaths in the US is believed to be due to people staying home more due to the cold weather and better compliance with regulations on mask use and social distancing.

The first death from Covid-19 in the USwas recorded in California in early February 2020 and increased to 100,000 within 4 months. The 200,000 and 300,000 milestones were recorded in September and December. In just the first 2 months of 2021, this number has surpassed the 400,000 and 500,000 milestones, respectively.

President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris will attend a White House event on February 22 to commemorate the half-million people who have died from Covid-19 in the US. President Biden will order flags at federal agencies to be flown at half-staff for five days to remember the victims of Covid-19.

The National Cathedral in Washington, DC also rang 500 bells on the same day to commemorate these victims./.
