City Department of EducationBeijinghas issued a notice on initiating the yellow emergency response level on air pollution, requiring secondary schools, primary schools, kindergartens and educational units, and sports halls in the area to stop outdoor physical activities from March 10.

Schools in Beijing also said they would replace outdoor physical education classes with indoor activities or physical education sessions.

Information from the Beijing air quality monitoring network this morning said that the PM2.5 index (index of dust particles with a diameter of 2.5 micrometers or less in 1 cubic meter of air) measured here was 254 micrograms/m3– reached serious pollution levels.
