According to information from the Traffic Police of Quang Tri Province, at around 3:00 p.m. on March 20, a container truck with license plate 15C-312.14 pulling a trailer with license plate 15R-044.93, driven by Tran Van Dong (born in 1981, in Hai Chau district, Da Nang city), was traveling on National Highway 9 from Lao Bao International Border Gate to Dong Ha city, Quang Tri.

When reaching km57+600 on National Highway 9 in Lang Cat village, Dakrong commune (Dakrong district), the container truck crashed into 4 other cars in succession, including: Road repair truck with license plate 74C-036.96; car with license plate 74A-126.59 driven by Nguyen Van Bien (born in 1971, in Tan Hop commune, Huong Hoa district, Quang Tri), carrying 4 people; truck with license plate 74D-002.16 driven by Le Van Quang (born in 1972, in ward 5, Dong Ha city, Quang Tri) carrying 1 person; car with license plate 74A-024.65 driven by Nguyen Van Hai (in Tan Kim village, Lao Bao town, Huong Hoa district, Quang Tri), carrying 1 person.
