Xa Long is one of the most remote villages of Bao Nam commune, with a population mainly of the Khmu people. This village is about 20 km from the center of Bao Nam commune, and about 5 km from Huoi Tu Boarding Secondary School.

In just the past 2 months, this village has had 3 people die from suicide by using poison ivy. All the victims were 7th graders. Apart from the latest case studying at Huoi Tu Boarding Secondary School, the previous 2 cases studied at Bao Nam Boarding Secondary School for Ethnic Minorities.

According to Mr. Nguyen Tan Phuong - Principal of Bao Nam Ethnic Boarding Secondary School, the reasons for the students' suicides are very simple. Accordingly, a few weeks before the Lunar New Year 2021, a female student in grade 7 of the school decided to commit suicide by eating poison ivy because of love but was prevented by her family. Not long after, a male student in grade 7 refused to go to school after Tet holiday. The school and family had to persuade him a lot before he would continue to go to school. However, on the way to school, he decided to pick poison ivy on the side of the road to commit suicide....

According to statistics from Bao Nam commune, in 2020 alone, the whole commune had at least 12 people who committed suicide after eating poison ivy.
