Thailand's Covid-19 Death Toll Hits Record High

Thailand on May 18 recorded 35 deaths from Covid-19, the highest number of deaths in a single day since the outbreak in the country.

According to Reuters, among them is the youngest victim of theCovid-19, the 2-month-old baby has a heart disease.

After more than a year of good epidemic control, Thailand is facing the third wave of Covid-19, which broke out in April, with the number of new infections increasing more than 3 times and the number of deaths increasing 6 times.

Bangkok, the epicenter of this outbreak, recorded 876 new infections on May 17 alone.

"The number of new cases in Bangkok is very high. Overall, the number of new cases is still increasing," Reuters quoted Taweesin Wisanuyothin, a spokesman for Thailand's Covid-19 task force.

Thailand has a total of 113,555 people who have tested positive for Covid-19. Of the 2,473 new cases in the past 24 hours, about 680 were detected through mass testing in prisons.

With 35 more deaths from Covid-19, the list of unfortunate Covid-19 victims in Thailand has reached 649.

Thailand has been successful in controlling the pandemic, keeping the number of infections low until the third outbreak. To prevent the spread of the virus, Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha announced that the government plans to vaccinate at least 5 million people in Bangkok, or 70% of the city's population, against Covid-19 in June and July.

Thailand has so far administered more than 2.3 million doses of Covid-19 vaccines, mostly to frontline workers or high-risk groups. The country plans to start mass vaccinations in June, aiming to inoculate 70% of its 66 million adult population.
