Russian President Putin has expressed the view that the United States is following the path of the Soviet Union.
The Empire Problem
"Where does the problem with empires lie? It seems to them that power allows them to make small mistakes and errors – we will buy these things, we will scare this country, we will agree to these things… But the number of problems keeps increasing – and eventually they can no longer be dealt with," the Russian president said on the sidelines of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF), referring to the US policy of building relations with other countries.

"And the United States, with its confident stride, confident gait, and firm steps, is following the path of the Soviet Union," he added, noting that he himself was born in the Soviet Union.
