This is one of the first important legal documents to serve as a basis for directing the organization and implementation of veterinary activities over a long period of time. To recognize and evaluate the importance of the veterinary industry, on July 12, 2005, the Prime Minister issued a Decision allowing July 11 to be annually observed as the "Traditional Day of the Veterinary Industry".

Overcoming difficulties and challenges

Along with the formation and development of the industryVeterinaryVietnam, Nghe An Veterinary has made new progress. During the implementation process,Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary MedicineNghe An has always received the attention, leadership and direction of the Central Government, Provincial Party Committee, Provincial People's Council, Provincial People's Committee, the drastic and synchronous participation of departments, branches, authorities at all levels and the efforts of the people. To meet the requirements and demands of disease prevention and control, food safety in the period of international integration, Nghe An Veterinary Department has continuously invested in equipment, trained a team of staff with good expertise, bright ethics, dedicated service to people and businesses to ensure disease safety, develop production, create products that ensure food safety to serve domestic consumers and export.

Particularly in recent times, the industry has achieved high results in preventing and controlling livestock, poultry and aquatic diseases, effectively controlling many dangerous animal diseases; infectious diseases such as foot-and-mouth disease, avian influenza, blue ear disease, rabies, etc. have significantly decreased in the number of outbreaks and scale, thereby reducing economic losses for livestock breeders and the State budget.

Most recently, African swine fever and lumpy skin disease in cattle and buffaloes are very dangerous infectious diseases that have just invaded our country and the province, but after a period of synchronous and drastic implementation of prevention and control solutions, the disease has been basically controlled, and has been recognized and highly appreciated by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and the Department of Animal Health as a locality with good and effective disease prevention and control.

These achievements have significantly contributed to the socio-economic development of the province, building a solid position for the Veterinary industry to develop and integrate.

Nghe An is one of the provinces with a diverse and developed livestock industry with a large herd of livestock and poultry: the whole province has more than 760 thousand buffaloes and cows; 914 thousand pigs and more than 28 million poultry. In recent years, the province's livestock industry has faced many difficulties and challenges: climate change has caused extreme weather, the disease situation in livestock and poultry has become very complicated, especially new diseases have invaded our country such as African swine fever, lumpy skin disease, avian influenza H5N8... In the coming time, the livestock and veterinary industry will have many opportunities but also many challenges. Therefore, to perform well the assigned tasks, the collective of Nghe An Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Department continues to enhance the spirit of solidarity, overcome all difficulties, bring all capabilities, responsibilities, be proactive in all situations and promote professional creativity to perform well the work of disease prevention and control in parallel with livestock development, actively contributing to the work of hunger eradication, poverty reduction, and socio-economic development of the province.

Effective prevention and control of avian influenza

Nghe An is a province with diverse terrain suitable for livestock development, with a large poultry herd. However, currently, the livestock is mainly raised by households and small-scale farms, with limited measures for biosafety, hygiene, and disease prevention disinfection; there are many national highways passing through, and frequent trading of animals and animal products, etc., so it is very difficult to prevent epidemics from other provinces and cities into the area; in addition, the vaccination rate for poultry is still low.

Faced with that reality, the Department has synchronously implemented many solutions such as: Strengthening information, propaganda, training and coaching; Strengthening control of poultry transportation and slaughter control; effectively building and organizing programs and projects: National plan for avian influenza prevention and control; passive and active surveillance programs of the province; of the Central Government; Project programs such as CDC, FAO...

In particular, for avian influenza, vaccination is the most effective solution, so vaccination is always focused on. Every year, avian influenza vaccination is carried out simultaneously in two main seasons: Spring season from March 15 to April 15, Autumn season from September 15 to October 15 and supplementary vaccination. Poultry farms comply with all vaccinations according to regulations and the facility's plan.

Along with that, the Department has guided poultry farms to apply good husbandry practices, ensuring veterinary hygiene and food safety. In parallel with vaccination, every year, the Provincial People's Committee launches 4-5 disinfection campaigns across the province at times after vaccination, during the changing seasons, after floods and inundations when diseases are likely to occur. In addition, the province always has a reserve of chemicals to provide to districts for emergency disinfection and containment of outbreaks.

Mr. Ngo Duc Quynh - Deputy Head of the Department of Animal Health and Livestock Husbandry of Nghe An province said: Thanks to the good implementation of the work of preventing and controlling avian influenza in particular and other diseases in livestock and poultry, it has made an important contribution to ensuring disease safety for livestock, stabilizing and developing production. By June 2021, the total poultry herd is estimated at 28,343 thousand heads, up 8.49% over the same period in 2020, the total poultry meat output is estimated at 47,312 tons, up 9.087% over the same period in 2020 and egg output is estimated at 335,610 thousand eggs, up 5.01% over the same period in 2020.

Currently, the province is implementing a plan to prevent and control avian influenza in Nghe An province for the period 2019-2025 (issued with Decision No. 1116/QD-UBND dated April 9, 2019 of the People's Committee of Nghe An province) and to achieve high results, it is necessary to have the attention and direction of the People's Committees of districts, cities, towns, relevant departments and branches, the cooperation and cooperation of people, organizations and individuals raising livestock in the area.
