Young man leads online football betting ring

Previously, in early June 2021, through the work of grasping the situation, Do Luong District Police discovered a network operating in a tight, sophisticated group style, using high technology to organize gambling, gambling in the form offootball bettingon the air with the amount up to tens of billions of dong.

The leader of this gambling ring is Tran Duy Manh (born 1996), residing in Dai Son commune, Do Luong district (Nghe An).

Expanding the investigation, the police identified Manh as a subject with 02 previous convictions, colluding with a number of other subjects without stable jobs to set up a football betting line for EURO 2020 and Copa America 2021. The Do Luong District Police quickly established a special case, determined to soon destroy this criminal ring.

At 4:30 p.m. on July 12, 2021, the Special Task Force mobilized 20 officers and soldiers to coordinate with officers of the Criminal Police Department and the Drug Crime Investigation Police (Nghe An Provincial Police) to urgently detain Tran Duy Manh for gambling, seizing 02 bank cards and 03 mobile phones.

Immediately afterwards, 7 other subjects all residing in Do Luong district who were part of the gambling ring were also simultaneously arrested by Do Luong district police, including: Bui Sy Hoi (born 1994); Le Van Manh (born 1991), Nguyen Van Hanh (born 1991), Nguyen Van Ha (born 1993), Nguyen Van Huynh (born 1989), Nguyen Bao Son (born 1995) all residing in Dai Son commune and Hoang Van Dung (born 1993), residing in Tru Son commune.

During the investigation and exploitation of electronic data, Do Luong District Police determined that from the beginning of June 2021 until his arrest, Tran Duy Manh and his accomplices had been betting on football with tens of billions of VND. On July 10 and 12, 2021 alone, the subjects bet on football with an amount of over 5.5 billion VND.

During the crime, Tran Duy Manh used a Zalo account to log in on his phone to send "bets" on matches to gamblers. After the gamblers had placed their bets, Manh transferred them to another person in another province to receive a percentage of the commission. To avoid detection by the police, Manh paid the gamblers by bank transfer, while committing the crime he stayed at home with the door locked, all transactions were conducted via cyberspace.
