Official arrested for adding relatives' names to Covid-19 support list

Specifically, at 6:30 p.m. the same day, the Investigation Police Agency of Thu Duc City Police initiated a case, prosecuted the accused and issued an order to temporarily detain Huynh Hong Son (born in 1970, permanent resident of Phu Huu Ward, Thu Duc City, officer in charge of labor, war invalids and social affairs of Phu Huu Ward, Thu Duc City) for the crime of "Abusing position and power in performing official duties" under Article 356 of the Penal Code.

According to initial information, through receiving and processing reports from people, the Investigation Police Agency of Thu Duc City Police discovered suspicious negative activities in the distribution of Covid-19 support packages for workers in Phu Huu Ward. During the investigation, the Investigation Police Agency of Thu Duc City Police discovered that Huynh Hong Son took advantage of his position as a member of the Council for Appraisal and Review of Support Files for Workers Without Labor Contracts Affected by the Covid-19 Pandemic of Phu Huu Ward, Thu Duc City to collude with a number of individuals to create files to receive support money, even though he was not eligible under Resolution No. 09/2021/NQ-HDND dated June 25, 2021 of the People's Council of Ho Chi Minh City, causing loss of State funds.
According to the Investigation Police Agency, Huynh Hong Son was assigned to review and compile a list of people receiving support due to the impact of the Covid-19 epidemic. During the process, Mr. Son arbitrarily added the names of many of his relatives even though these people were not eligible and eligible for support. These people received a total of about 10 million VND.
The police investigation agency said that although the amount of damage was small, the nature of the incident was particularly serious, affecting the social security work of the local government.
Initially working with the Investigation Agency, the defendant cooperated and admitted to violating the law.
Currently, the Investigation Police Agency of Thu Duc City Police is continuing to investigate and expand the case, clarifying the violations of the accused and related people to strictly handle them according to the provisions of the law. At the same time, the City Party Committee and the People's Committee of Thu Duc City are also clarifying and considering the responsibility of the leaders of the People's Committee of Phu Huu Ward.
