Man who brought more than half a billion to buy drugs was sentenced to death
(Baonghean.vn) - Doan Van Dung confessed that because he was addicted, he spent 650 million VND to buy drugs to use gradually during the Lunar New Year. Although the defendant confessed that he did not buy or sell drugs, the death penalty was still pronounced.
On October 11, at the People's Court of Nghe An province, the High People's Court in Hanoi opened a criminal appeal trial of defendant Doan Van Dung (born 1978), residing in Nghi Duc commune, Vinh city, for the crime of "Illegal drug trafficking".
According to the case file, on January 22, 2020, Doan Van Dung went to the forest area in Tri Le commune, Que Phong district to buy 650 million VND worth of drugs from a Lao man. After that, Dung took nearly 3 kg of drugs to hide in 2 houses in hamlets 16 and 17, Nghi Phu commune, Vinh city with the intention of reselling for profit.

On the morning of January 28, Dung directed his wife, Nguyen Thi Trang (born in 1974), to sell 2 types of drugs for a total of 4.5 million VND to Nguyen Cong Hoi (born in 1980, residing in Vinh City).
On February 13, when Hoi was selling drugs to Pham Minh Hieu (born in 1977), residing in Vinh City, he was arrested by the police. Based on Hieu's statement, the police orderedhold people in case of emergencyfor Hoi. Then, Hoi confessed to buying drugs from Trang.
On February 17, the police arrested Trang. When the police searched Trang's residence, her husband, Doan Van Dung, voluntarily handed over the drugs to the police.
The investigation agency determined that Doan Van Dung must bear criminal responsibility for the act of buying and selling nearly 3 kg of drugs. Nguyen Thi Trang must bear criminal responsibility for the act of buying and selling 4.815 grams of drugs. Nguyen Cong Hoi must bear criminal responsibility for the act of buying and selling 6.35 grams of drugs.
At the first instance trial held in mid-December 2020, defendant Dung confessed that because of greed, he bought a large amount of drugs to sell during Tet. The remaining defendants all admitted to the crimes as charged in the indictment.
The court of first instance sentenced Doan Van Dung to death for illegal drug trafficking, defendant Nguyen Thi Trang to 2 years in prison, defendant Nguyen Cong Hoi to 5 years in prison, and defendant Pham Minh Hieu to 12 months in prison.
Defendant Doan Van Dung then appealed for a reduced sentence. At today's trial, defendant Dung stated that because he was addicted to drugs, he bought a large quantity before Tet to use gradually rather than sell.
