(Baonghean.vn) - As the reed harvesting season approaches, many households in the western mountainous district of Nghe An province are buying reeds from locals, peeling them, drying them, and selling them to traders.

The harvesting season for reeds in the mountainous district of Kỳ Sơn usually begins before the Lunar New Year. Taking advantage of the agricultural off-season, people go to the fields to cut reeds to sell; if they work hard, each person can earn 150,000 - 200,000 VND per day. Photo: Tiến Đông
After harvesting, the reeds can be sold fresh to dealers, or the locals can dry them themselves and wait for traders from the lowlands to come and buy them. Photo: Tien Dong
Ms. Nguyen Thi Hang, residing in Ba village, Huu Kiem commune (Ky Son district), who specializes in buying reeds from local people, said that each 10 kg of fresh reeds is purchased for 70,000 VND, and after drying, it is sold for 200,000 - 230,000 VND. Photo: Tien Dong
In Ky Son district, the communes of Chieu Luu, Ta Ca, Huu Kiem, etc., are areas where many people participate in harvesting reeds. After peeling the outer layer and stripping the leaves, the remaining reeds are dried. Photo: Tien Dong
Typically, about 2 kg of fresh reeds, after drying, will yield 1 kg of finished product. This is then sold to traders who take it to the lowlands to weave it into brooms or other handicrafts. (Photo: Tien Dong)
Ms. Kha Thi Chuyen, also residing in Ba village, Huu Kiem commune, has so far invested over 30 million VND in purchasing reeds from local people, waiting for the price to increase or for traders to come and buy them before selling them. Photo: Tien Dong
Fresh reeds, after being purchased, need to be peeled, the leaves removed, and dried immediately. If they get wet, they will become moldy and rot. Photo: Tien Dong
