Fake BTS stations of telecommunications carriers spread illegal messages
Initially, Chen Jiong, a Chinese national, confessed that he used fake BTS devices to send about 60,000 to 70,000 messages to users every day.

Based on the collected documents, on January 30, the Criminal Police Department of Hanoi City Police issued a decision to prosecute the case; prosecute the accused and temporarily detain Chen Jiong (Chinese nationality) for the crime of illegally accessing another person's computer network, telecommunications network or electronic means, as prescribed in Article 289 of the Penal Code.
Recently, in some areas of Hanoi, some people have received messages from the number 8079, which are fake messages sent from devices impersonating the "BTS stations of telecommunications networks in Vietnam". All of this data does not go through the network systems, this situation occurs due to a vulnerability in the 2G (GSM) network.

From the information collected, the Department of Cyber Security and High-Tech Crime Prevention coordinated with professional units of Hanoi City Police to arrest Chen Jiong.
At the police station, Chen Jiong initially confessed that by using a fake BTS station device, he successfully sent about 60,000 to 70,000 messages to users every day. Mobile devices within the coverage area of this fake BTS will initially lose signal, then switch to 2G mode and can continue to be used to listen, call, and send messages (but at a slower speed than normal because they have to go through an intermediate fake station to connect to the real BTS station of telecommunications networks.

In addition, the subject also confessed that he and many other subjects in Vietnam used fake BTS devices similar to what Chen Jiong was using to spread messages with various contents, concentrated in major provinces and cities across the country.
Currently, the Criminal Police Department of Hanoi City Police is urgently continuing to coordinate with the Department of Cyber Security and High-Tech Crime Prevention of Hanoi City Police; the Department of Cyber Security and High-Tech Crime Prevention to investigate and clarify the case and expand the fight against the use of high technology by foreign subjects to commit illegal acts in Vietnam.
