The Russian Defense Ministry said the Admiral Gorshkov destroyer of the Russian Northern Fleet launched a Zircon cruise missile from the Barents Sea, hitting a training target in the White Sea 1,000 km away.

This test launch was the latest of the Zircon missile, which is expected to be operational later this year.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said that Zircon is capable of flying nine times the speed of sound and has a range of 1,000 km. President Putin also emphasized that the deployment of this missile will significantly enhance the capabilities of the Russian military.

This image released by the Russian Defense Ministry Press Office on May 28, 2022 shows the Zircon hypersonic cruise missile being launched from the Admiral Gorshkov destroyer from the Barents Sea.

The Zircon missile is expected to be deployed on Russian cruisers, destroyers and submarines, as well as used to attack enemy ships and ground targets. It is one of several hypersonic missiles currently under development in Russia.

Russian officials have praised the Zircon's capabilities and said no current missile defense system could intercept it.

President Putin also previously warned that Russian warships equipped with Zircon missiles would give Russia the ability to attack "decision-making centers" in just a few minutes if deployed in neutral waters./.
