(Baonghean.vn) - Russia warns that if Ukrainian forces continue to attack the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, a nuclear disaster could happen at any time.

Russia's UN Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia said Kiev's "reckless" actions were pushing the world closer to a large-scale nuclear disaster. The plant has been under Russian control since the start of the conflict between Moscow and Kiev and has since been shelled several times by Ukrainian forces.

Speaking before the UN Security Council, Mr. Nebenzia stated: “We have repeatedly warned our Western colleagues that if they do not have a reasonable dialogue with the Kiev government, Ukraine will take the most reckless and terrible steps, which will lead to consequences far beyond the territory of Ukraine. That is exactly what is happening,” he warned, warning that Western “sponsors” will be responsible for a potential nuclear disaster.

Kiev's attacks on nuclear infrastructure are pushing the world to the brink of a nuclear disaster comparable to Chernobyl.

According to Russia's special envoy to the United Nations, the disaster at the Zaporizhzhia Power Plant - Europe's largest power plant - could lead to radioactive contamination over large areas, affecting at least eight regions of Ukraine, including the capital Kiev, major cities such as Kharkov or Odessa, and some territories of Russia and Belarus bordering Ukraine.

He warned that the self-proclaimed Luhansk and Donetsk People's Republics, as well as Moldova, Romania and Bulgaria, could also be affected.

Earlier, the US Under Secretary of State for International Security and Arms Control, Bonnie Jenkins, said that Russia had created all the risks related to the Zaporizhzhia Plant by invading Ukraine and asked Moscow to withdraw its troops. At the same time, she also supported the call of UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres to establish a demilitarized zone./.
