Signs that your car's spark plugs are having problems.
Spark plugs are a crucial component in a car, determining its ability to operate efficiently.
Although we may use our cars daily and not think much about them, automobiles are sophisticated machines with many complex parts working together to provide the driver with a seamless experience. However, this high level of complexity also means a higher likelihood of malfunctions. In particular, engines depend on several separate systems to function, and some of the smallest, often overlooked, components, such as spark plugs, are crucial. These devices are essential for engines and cars, enabling them to start and run.
What is a spark plug?

Spark plugs in a car engine are responsible for creating an electrical spark that ignites the air-fuel mixture, initiating the combustion process that produces power in the engine. They are located at the top of the cylinder head in the combustion chamber, and cars usually have one spark plug per cylinder. However, in some cases, drivers will find two spark plugs per cylinder. Dual-ignition V8 engines, like the one in the Jeep Grand Cherokee, have up to 16 spark plugs.
The lifespan of spark plugs varies depending on the brand and materials they are made from. The interval at which drivers should replace spark plugs is specified by the vehicle manufacturer, so remember to check your owner's manual for the recommended replacement frequency and follow the basic maintenance schedule.
Symptoms of a faulty spark plug

Faulty spark plugs can seriously affect vehicle operation and may even lead to reduced performance. They can also negatively impact factors like fuel economy or even damage the engine, resulting in much more expensive repairs. To help users avoid this, here are the symptoms of a faulty spark plug that they should be aware of:
- The car has difficulty starting: This is a very noticeable sign. The ignition coils supply the electrical charge to the spark plugs, and when the ignition coils are faulty, the spark plugs will not be able to start the combustion process. Sometimes the spark plugs themselves are the problem, being worn or clogged and unable to produce that essential spark.
- Engine fails to start: Because there are many possible causes for this, it's a less obvious symptom. However, a faulty spark plug can certainly cause it. The owner might even hear a popping sound or notice that the engine suddenly loses power for a second before starting again.
- Impaired engine performance: Ignition, acceleration, and overall performance will be affected if any cylinder fails to ignite its fuel mixture. This is a sign of a faulty spark plug.
- Loud and noisy engine idle: When the spark plugs are not working, the corresponding cylinders in the engine also don't function properly. When the cylinders are pumping but not actually completing anything, they can make a loud noise.
- Fuel economy: A slightly less obvious sign of poorly functioning spark plugs is a decline in the vehicle's overall fuel economy. Drivers need to be the type who pay close attention to their driving and fueling habits, and if they are, they will notice a drop in fuel efficiency because at least some of the fuel isn't igniting and burning properly.
- Poor emissions test results and exhaust fumes that smell like gas: Because some fuel is not burned in the engine, it enters the exhaust system, where it evaporates and creates a strong odor. An emissions test will show that there are more gasoline vapors than normal.
