On September 13, the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) shared information that Coach Dinh The Nam had just attended a press conference before the 2023 AFC U20 Qualifiers. At the press conference, Coach Dinh The Nam said: “We just arrived in Indonesia yesterday. This is the 2023 AFC U20 Qualifiers, so it is very important. Like other teams, U20 Vietnam is ready to bring all their spirit and expertise to help make the tournament a great success.”

Also at the press conference, U20 Hong Kong (China) Coach Cheung Kin Fung expressed the team's determination and hoped the team would achieve the best results.

“We also played some friendly matches to prepare for this tournament. Hopefully, Hong Kong will perform well and get positive results,” shared the Hong Kong U20 Head Coach.

Meanwhile, coach Shin Tae Yong of host Indonesia said: “We have prepared to achieve good results and compete with the three participating teams here. The players have been training very hard towards the qualifying matches.”

The qualifying round of Group F has the participation of 4 teams including U20 Vietnam, Timor Leste, Hong Kong (China) and host Indonesia. The group winner will win a ticket to the 2023 AFC U20 Championship Finals. The runner-up still has a chance to participate in the Finals on the condition that they are among the 5 best runner-up teams in the 10 qualifying groups.

Singapore brings its strongest squad to Vietnam

The three Fandi brothers and naturalized Korean striker Song Ui-young are on the list of 23 Singaporean players who will travel to Ho Chi Minh City to participate in a friendly tournament during FIFA Days in September.

On the afternoon of September 13, the Football Association of Singapore (FAS) announced the list of players to be called up for the two FIFA Days friendly matches against Vietnam and India. The September training session is important in the process of reviewing the squad to prepare for the AFF Cup 2022, so Head Coach Takayuki Nishigaya has called up the best players.

Half of the names on the list coming to Vietnam this time have participated in the 2020 AFF Cup at Singapore's home ground, such as center back Irfan Fandi, striker Ikhsan Fandi, naturalized striker Song Ui-young, veteran goalkeeper Hassan Sunny, Singapore defender Ryhan Stewart and experienced names like Faris Ramli and Shahdan Sulaiman.

Mr. Nishigaya shared: “After watching and observing the matches in the National Championship, I think I have chosen the best faces and I also want to try out new factors. The Vietnam team (ranked 98th in the world) and India (104th) are both ranked higher than Singapore (159th). Facing them is a challenge and an opportunity for us to learn before the AFF Cup 2022, the most important tournament of the year.”

With 4 AFF Cup championships in 1998, 2004, 2007 and 2012, the Singapore team used to be a force in Southeast Asian football but did not have outstanding achievements for many years.
