The Russian Defense Ministry statement said: "By the decision of the Minister of Defense of the Russian Federation, General Sergey Surovikin was appointed Commander of the joint forces in the area of the special military operation."

The general has served as commander of the Russian Aerospace Forces since 2017. That same year, he was awarded the title Hero of Russia in recognition of his role in military operations in Syria. He also fought in Chechnya before that.

According to various sources, his comrades nicknamed Sergey Surovikin "General Armageddon" to reflect his tough and unorthodox approach to military operations.

In late June, the Russian Defense Ministry announced that General Surovikin's forces had wiped out a large Ukrainian force in the Gorskoye region of the self-proclaimed Lugansk Republic.

The appointment comes as Russian troops recently withdrew from the key town of Lyman./.
