Ngan and Mr. Dinh Huu L. have a husband and wife relationship. Mr. L. is deaf and mute. During their time together, Mr. L. suspected that his wife had another man, so a conflict arose between the couple.conflict.

On the evening of November 12, 2021, when going to bed, Mr. L. complained of a headache, so Ngan gave him some sedatives. After that, Mr. L. went out onto the porch and hit his head on the porch.

Ngan went out and was chased away by her husband, so she used a broom to hit Mr. L. Then this woman used an iron door latch to repeatedly hit her husband in the dangerous areas. The husband was stunned and fell to the ground. Ngan continued to beat her husband until the victim passed out.

After committing the crime, Ngan dragged her husband to the corner of the yard, took off his clothes and threw them away, and wiped the blood off the victim’s body. Afraid that her actions would be recorded by the camera, Ngan took the tablet and phone and threw them outside. Ngan woke her child up, told him that his father was dead, and told him to “run to the neighbor’s house when I scream” to report the news. After that, this woman took a glass bottle and a tire pump and threw them into the yard, turned on the lights and sat down to cry.

Neighbors rushed over after receiving the news and found that Mr. L. had died. An autopsy showed that Mr. L. had more than 30 injuries on many parts of his body, and his skull was broken into many pieces. The cause of death was due to a fractured skull and a brain hemorrhage due to trauma.

At the first instance trial, the defendant could not explain why she used many weapons to beat her husband to death and kept saying, "At that time, I was like an animal, not thinking of anything."

The court of first instance sentenced defendant Hoang Thi Ngan to life in prison for murder; ordered to compensate her mother-in-law and two biological children for mental damage, totaling 149 million VND; and to provide 1.5 million VND/month for each child until they reach adulthood.

After that, Ngan filed an appeal for a lighter sentence. At the appeal hearing, the defendant presented her difficult circumstances and sick children, asking the court to consider a lighter sentence so that she could return home soon to take care of and compensate for her children's emotional needs.

The victim's representative attended the court and requested to maintain the original sentence for defendant Ngan.

The Court of Appeal determined that the defendant had intentionally committed the crime to the end, committing the crime against a person with a serious disability, therefore the sentence imposed by the Court of First Instance was appropriate. At this trial, the defendant did not provide any new details. Therefore, the Court of Appeal rejected the appeal and upheld the life sentence for Hoang Thi Ngan.
