These days, along both sides of National Highway 15A, through Trang Son Commune (Do Luong), gardens of green squash in neat rows, in full bloom and fruiting, can be seen. When asked, we learned that these are gardens.pumpkinSome farmers from Anh Son district came here to rent land for production.
The owner of the pumpkin garden, Mr. Nguyen Van Vinh, is engrossed in taking care of the pumpkins under the cool green trellis made of bamboo and plastic nets. He said: Coming from a farming family in village 5, Tao Son commune (Anh Son), he has had a lot of experience in agriculture, especially growing vegetables. Because his family's land capital is not much, for many years now, he and some people in the village have gone to other localities to rent land to produce commercial vegetables. From Thanh Chuong to Do Luong... for nearly 10 years, every year his group rents dozens of hectares of land to produce vegetables, of which green pumpkins are the mainstay.

With this land of Trang Son commune, Do Luong district, his group rented nearly 15 hectares, of which he owns 3 hectares. The land rent is 8 million VND/ha/year, for a period of 5 consecutive years. With land in hand, Mr. Vinh and everyone in the group produce 2 crops of green squash a year, supplying the market with hundreds of tons. Because with the experience gained and the way of care and reasonable investment, 1 hectare is expected to yield 70 - 80 tons of fruit.
To grow 1 hectare of squash, the investment is about 140 million VND, because in addition to seeds, fertilizers... you also have to invest in trellises. All products are sold to independent traders at current market prices. Because before planting, they have linked up with traders in the North to consume the products. Therefore, when the squash is ready to be harvested, traders drive cars to the garden to buy everything.
However, to avoid the situation of "oversupply", Vinh's group divided the pumpkins into many batches to harvest evenly. Therefore, next to the pumpkin gardens that have started to produce fruit are plots of land that have just been planted.

"Last spring, the price of green squash was good, averaging 10,000 VND/kg, and gardeners made a good profit. Butwinter cropThis time the price has dropped to 6,000 - 7,000 VND/kg, although not as much as the previous crop, but still profitable. Although farming is hard, if there is a connection with the output, there is no need to worry about unsold products," said Mr. Nguyen Van Vinh.
According to Mr. Le Anh Son - Director of Do Luong District Agricultural Service Center, currently some people from other localities come toagricultural land leasein the district, most of which are in Trang Son commune. This method is beneficial for both sides, because when local people do not have production needs, leasing land to farmers from other localities will make the fields cleaner and more beautiful, and supply goods to the market better./.
