Mosquitoes are one of the "culprits" that cause infectious diseases for both adults and children. Below are some natural and safe methods to prevent mosquito bites for children that families should refer to to protect the health of their members.

1. Lemon eucalyptus

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has classified lemon eucalyptus, an EPA-registered mosquito repellent, as an active ingredient in mosquito repellents.

In a study published in June 2014 in the journal Fitoterapia, lemon eucalyptus essential oil was found to provide 100% protection against mosquitoes for up to 12 hours. It is a very good insect repellent.

However, you should note that it should not be used for children under 3 years old. In addition, lemon eucalyptus also helps reduce common cold symptoms, such as stuffy nose and cough.

2. Catnip Oil

What most people know about catnip oil is its common use on cats. But it can also be used as an herb. And research shows that it can also be used to repel mosquitoes. The scent of catnip repels mosquitoes but is pleasant to humans.

3. Peppermint essential oil

According to the American College of Health Sciences, based in Portland, Oregon, peppermint oil is a natural insecticide and a very good mosquito repellent. Peppermint oil can be mixed with other scents, such as lemon, lemongrass and applied to the skin for a minty scent. However, it should be noted that peppermint oil is a hot oil and it can cause a burning sensation when applied directly and can cause a rash on the skin. So, when mixing, remember to dilute or use some other oils to go with it.

4. Lemongrass essential oil

According to a study published in July 2016 in the World Journal of Pharmaceutical and Pharmaceutical Sciences, citronella essential oil is comparable to popular mosquito repellants. Combining citronella oil with another essential oil (such as cinnamon bark oil) makes its repellent effect stronger.

5. Remove standing water

Any pool or puddle of water around your home or yard can become a breeding ground for mosquitoes. Tips to keep the area around your home clear and clean to limit mosquitoes. Unclog roof gutters, ensure rain does not collect in trash can lids, place flower pots or any other unused containers upside down, etc.
