(Baonghean.vn) - On average, the farm produces about 10 tons of earthworms and about 300 tons of manure per year. With earthworms priced at 50,000 VND/kg and manure at 3,500 VND/kg, the annual revenue from earthworm farming reaches 1 billion VND.

In 2019, Mr. Duong Van Tu moved from Luc Ngan (Bac Giang) to Thanh Lam (Thanh Chuong) to start a business. After researching the local situation, Mr. Tu realized that there were many large-scale livestock farms in the area, generating a considerable amount of animal waste, but none of them were properly processing the manure in a way that would yield economic benefits.

Accordingly, Mr. Tú partnered with a large-scale pig farm with over 5,000 pigs in Thanh Lâm commune to raise earthworms. The pig farm would provide the waste material and infrastructure (land, pens, etc.), while Mr. Tú would contribute his labor and technical expertise, with profits shared equally.

"On average, this pig herd produces about 600 tons of manure per year. The waste is processed by the farm using filtration tanks and biogas digesters, through a..."regulating lake; However, the foul odor has not been completely eliminated, significantly impacting the environment. Furthermore, this treatment system is often overloaded, resulting in high operating costs. "In 2020, the farm put into operation a system for treating pig manure by raising earthworms," said Mr. Duong Van Tu.

On an area of 2,000m²2The farm has invested in building settling tanks and rows of worm breeding pens… All the daily pig waste is mixed with water and used as food for the worms.

Anh Tú said: “The process of raising earthworms is not difficult, but to ensure that the worms develop evenly, the first important thing is to design the enclosures according to standards: soundproof, with sufficient light, cool temperature, and airtight enough to prevent insects from entering.”

After collection and filtration, the waste is transferred directly to a fermentation tank for acid treatment and removal of harmful bacteria. The pig waste is then pumped directly into the worm feed. A harvest is ready after 30-45 days. On average, the farm produces about 10 tons of worms and 300 tons of manure annually."

The farm produces earthworms and worm castings.usemaking animal feedpig farming, chicken, fish and processed into earthworm extract.(use(Used as a feed additive for livestock and as a foliar fertilizer for crops). It is also sold to eel farms and fruit orchards in the area at a price of 50,000 VND.copper/kg of worms, 3500 dong/kg of fertilizer,Each year, the farm generates revenue of up to 1 billion VND from earthworm farming.

Thanks to the implementation of a waste treatment model using earthworm farming, the environmental limitations of the pig farm have been overcome.

Mr. Thai Van Toan, Chairman of the Farmers' Association of Thanh Lam commune (Thanh Chuong district), said: "Thanks to Mr. Tu's technology transfer, many farmers in the commune have learned how to utilize livestock and poultry waste to raise earthworms, creating a closed-loop farming model that saves production costs and protects the environment."

Before Mr. Duong Van Tu,In Nghe An province, there have been many successful earthworm farming models in Nghia Dan, Quy Hop, Yen Thanh, etc. However, on a large scale, turning it into a marketable product and generating billions of dong in revenue, Mr. Tu is the pioneer.

“Currently, in addition to the pig farm in Thanh Lam commune, I am collaborating with other livestock farms in the area to raise earthworms, mealworms, and black soldier flies. Among these, earthworms have yielded outstanding economic results. Furthermore, I have transferred technology to dozens of large-scale farms, hundreds of small farms, and households on how to process animal waste into earthworms.”

Assessing the prospects of the earthworm farming model, organic agriculture expert Le Phong Hai – Center for Biotech Technology Solutions Research & Consulting – stated: “Utilizing agricultural and livestock by-products and applying scientific and technical methods to raise earthworms not only solves environmental problems but also provides a reliable source of high-quality fertilizer and protein-rich feed for livestock, while saving costs and aligning with the policy of developing organic agriculture and the long-term agricultural development strategy.”
