Replicating 200 friendly rice farming models in Hung Nguyen

(Baonghean.vn) - Up to now, 200 farming households in Hung Nguyen have applied environmentally friendly rice cultivation on a scale of 25 hectares.

On the afternoon of May 17, in Xuan Lam commune (Hung Nguyen district), the Provincial Farmers' Association held a summary of the Project "Propaganda and mobilization of farmers to apply environmentally friendly rice cultivation" in Hung Nguyen district for the period 2021-2023.

Attending the conference were comrades: Vo Van Phong - Vice Chairman of the Provincial Farmers' Association; Hoang Anh Tien - Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Hung Nguyen district, along with Farmers' Associations of communes and towns in Hung Nguyen, and households participating in the project.

Implementing the Decision of the Central Standing Committee of the Vietnam Farmers' Union on approving the Project "Propaganda and mobilization of farmers to apply environmentally friendly rice cultivation" in Nghe An province, period 2021-2023, the Standing Committee of the Nghe An Farmers' Union directed the implementation in the two communes of Xuan Lam and Long Xa (Hung Nguyen district).

Through the project, the aim is to improve farmers' knowledge about environmentally friendly rice cultivation (focusing on 3 main techniques including: reducing chemical fertilizers, alternating wet and dry irrigation, and post-harvest straw treatment).

Accordingly, in 2 years, the project organized 6 training courses for 120 core farmer members in the two communes of Xuan Lam and Long Xa to participate; organized 8 communication conferences on environmentally friendly rice cultivation for 160 core farmer households to participate.

To evaluate the effectiveness of applying environmentally friendly rice cultivation techniques, the Project Management Board has supported and directed the implementation of 6 demonstration models of environmentally friendly rice cultivation, with a scale of 1,000m2/model.

The model applies cultivation techniques: planting young seedlings, healthy seedlings, sparse planting, planting 01 stem; limiting the use of inorganic fertilizers (specifically reducing 1/3 of nitrogen fertilizer), adding organic fertilizers to create soil fertility; regulating water in the fields, draining water to create ventilation for the soil, using microbial products to treat straw after harvest.

After 3 production seasons, it has been confirmed that: Rice plants grow well, have strong tillering ability, are resistant to pests and diseases, and have larger panicles; the number of effective tillers is 9-12/clump, the number of solid grains per panicle is 150-160 (grains account for 87%); the actual yield is 3.3-3.6 quintals/sao, 40 kg/sao higher than the control field; production costs are reduced, specifically: seeds are reduced by 50% (only 0.8 - 1 kg of seeds are used/sao), nitrogen-reduced fertilizers (2 - 2.5 kg/sao), pesticides are reduced by 2 sprays/season. Economic efficiency is 23-25% higher than the control field.

From the effectiveness of the project and good propaganda work, up to now, in the two communes of Xuan Lam and Long Xa, 200 farming households have been mobilized to apply environmentally friendly rice cultivation and 200 models have been replicated with a scale of 25 hectares.

At the conference, relevant sectors and farmer members focused on exchanging and discussing the results achieved, limitations, weaknesses and causes in the project implementation process; sharing good experiences, creative and effective ways in implementing the goals, activities and tasks set out by the project.

At the same time, analyze and forecast the situation context to propose tasks and solutions that need to be focused on to develop and replicate environmentally friendly rice cultivation methods in Hung Nguyen district in the coming time.
