The biggest consequence of forgetting to turn off the engine is that your car could be stolen immediately.

Modern cars are often equipped with a keyless entry system. The technology works by allowing you to unlock your car without holding the key. Simply place your hand close enough to the door handle, and the car will emit a radio signal. If your key is within range of the signal, the doors will unlock automatically.

We cannot deny the convenience this feature offers to car owners; however, it can sometimes be a drawback if you forget to turn off the engine when you get out of the car.

The biggest security risk in this situation is car theft. Criminals can intercept radio signals and unlock the car even when you and the keys are not nearby. They do this by using electronic signal receivers purchased on the black market and placing them near the car to pick up signals from inside the vehicle.

After receiving a signal from the vehicle, the device will further amplify these signals to a second device near the car. From there, the car perceives the key is nearby, automatically unlocks the doors, and your car is "blown away."

Furthermore, if the engine is left idling for an extended period, the vehicle may experience negative effects such as: increased carbon buildup, clogged fuel injectors, diluted lubricating oil, and increased pollution.

Solutions to prevent forgetting to turn off the engine when getting out of the car:

Buy a Faraday bag:Faraday bags are devices capable of blocking electromagnetic fields, including radio waves that keys and vehicles use for communication. They accomplish this with a conductive mesh lining, preventing any signals from escaping and rejecting any external signals attempting to penetrate. Faraday bags are a popular choice due to their low cost and high effectiveness.

Use the steering wheel lock:A steering wheel lock is a practical security measure against car theft. The lock will secure the car's controls, even if a thief manages to break into your vehicle.

Install the tracking device:Tracking devices offer complete peace of mind for car owners. If a thief gets into the car and drives it away, the tracking device can ensure they can't go too far. The cost of tracking devices varies depending on the manufacturer and the make and model of your vehicle.

Change your habits:Ultimately, the best solution is to change your habits. Always remind yourself to turn off the engine when you get out of the car to protect your vehicle.
