Arrest of a subject who scammed people selling goods via social networks and appropriated deposits

(Baonghean.vn) -Thong Vu Minh created fake Facebook accounts and posted articles related to buying and selling computers and phones in large quantities. When customers wanted to make a transaction, Minh asked them to transfer deposits to the accounts he provided, then appropriated them.

Dien Chau District Police said that they have just successfully coordinated to arrest Thong Vu Minh (born in 1996), residing in Ward 12, District 8, Ho Chi Minh City, for the act of "fraudulent appropriation of property".

Previously, through the work of grasping the situation on cyberspace, Dien Chau District Police discovered that the Facebook account "si T Truong" of Thong Vu Minh often ran advertisements and posted about buying and selling computers and phones, which were suspected to be the account of a scammer. During the verification, the police determined that Thong Vu Minh had created fake Facebook accounts and posted articles related to buying and selling computers and phones in large quantities.

When customers wanted to make a transaction, Minh asked them to transfer deposits to accounts provided by Minh, then appropriated the money, did not send goods to the victims, and blocked the victims' Facebook, Zalo, and phone numbers.

After a period of good work in grasping the situation and synchronously implementing professional measures, on July 9, 2023, at his private home in District 8, Ho Chi Minh City, Dien Chau District Police successfully arrested Thong Vu Minh for "fraudulent appropriation of property"; confiscated 1 laptop, 3 mobile phones, 1 fake ID card, 2 bank cards and 25 million VND in cash.

During the investigation, it was initially proven that the subject had committed the act of "fraudulently appropriating property" through social networks of many victims with the amount of money appropriated being 170 million VND. In Dien Chau district alone, with the above method, Thong Vu Minh also appropriated more than 17 million VND from 1 victim.

Currently, Dien Chau District Police have temporarily detained the subject to continue the investigation and expand the investigation.

In cases where subjects ask to transfer deposits in advance through bank accounts, people need to be vigilant. Absolutely do not transfer money to people who do not have trust and clear identity. When detecting signs of fraud and property appropriation, it is necessary to immediately report to the police agency for investigation and handling.
