Online charity fundraising scam defrauds victims of over 3.6 billion VND.

Authorities have just issued a decision to prosecute and temporarily detain one suspect for allegedly defrauding more than 3,000 people of nearly 4 billion VND through a charity fundraising scheme.

On the afternoon of August 14th, the leaders of the Cư Jút District Police announced that they had coordinated with the relevant departments.CybersecurityIn collaboration with the High-Tech Crime Prevention and Control Unit, the Dak Nong Provincial Police have dismantled a "Fraudulent appropriation of property" case that occurred in the area.

Currently, the police in Cu Jut district have initiated a criminal case, charged the suspect, and issued a temporary detention order against Ngo Truong Thinh (born in 1993), residing in Tan Thoi Hoa ward, Tan Phu district, Ho Chi Minh City.

Initial investigations reveal that, needing money for football betting, from 2020 to the present, Ngo Truong Thinh created numerous Facebook accounts to post articles and images with appeals for donations to support cases of death, the elderly and lonely, those with serious illnesses, and to call for the construction of temples...

After posting the article and images on his personal Facebook page, many people transferred money to support Thinh through bank accounts, which he then misappropriated.

Police determined that from 2020 until his arrest on August 1, 2023, Thinh defrauded over 3.6 billion VND from more than 3,000 people in provinces and cities nationwide. Among them was Ms. Nguyen Thi Quynh N., residing in Cu Jut district.

During an emergency search of Ngo Truong Thinh's residence, the police seized items and documents related to online fraud and property appropriation. The case is being further investigated and expanded by the Cu Jut District Police.

The police in Cư Jút district are also urging anyone who has been a victim of similar fraud schemes to contact the Criminal Investigation Team of the Cư Jút District Police immediately for guidance and assistance.
