Cases of stopping on the highway

Pursuant to Article 26 of the 2008 Road Traffic Law, drivers on highways are only allowed to stop or park in designated areas; in cases where they are forced to stop or park in an illegal manner, drivers must move their vehicles off the roadway. If this is not possible, they must signal to other drivers.

If a driver intentionally stops on the highway without a valid reason, he will be punished according to the law.

Cases where stopping and parking are allowed while driving on the highway include:

Car broken down, had an accident: At that time, the driver needs to drive to the right of the roadway or if the vehicle cannot move, the driver needs to place objects or tree branches on the road to signal other vehicles and seek support from the traffic rescue team.

There is someone in the car who needs emergency medical help.: The driver may have health problems and need emergency care. In that case, the driver should stop the car on the right side of the highway and signal other vehicles.

Penalties for parking on the highway

Drivers of cars and similar vehicles who stop or park on the highway in violation of the following regulations will be fined from 10 million to 12 million VND, specifically: Stopping or parking on the highway in violation of regulations; Not signaling to let other drivers know when forced to stop or park on the highway in an inappropriate place; Making a U-turn while driving on the highway.

According to Decree 123/2021/ND-CP effective from January 1, 2022, the fine for parking on highways has increased from 6-8 million VND to 10-12 million VND.

In addition, drivers who commit the above violations will also be subject to additional penalties such as having their driver's license revoked for 02 to 04 months.
