President Putin warns of genetic engineering creating 'weapons of terrible destruction'
(Baonghean.vn)- Russia understands the “importance and danger” of genetic technology and seeks to maintain an ethical approach to this field of research, as it could eventually create “weapons of terrible destruction,” President Vladimir Putin asserted.
The Russian leader made the remarks while addressing schoolchildren on September 1, marking the start of the new school year. A short video of Putin's speech was posted on social media by journalist Pavel Zarubin on Sunday.
“According to experts, (genetics) is very important and dangerous. They say that those who take the lead in the field of genetics will have in their hands a weapon of terrible destructive power,” Putin said. However, Russia remains committed to maintaining an ethical approach to genetic research.
Mr Putin added that the country would ensure that the “positive foundation” behind genetics would not become a “threat to all of humanity”. The principal held an open lesson called “A Conversation About What Matters” on Friday, the first day of the new school year. The annual televised event was attended by about 30 students who have achieved outstanding results, such as winning prizes in international competitions in various fields./.
