Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that the increase in defense spending is necessary because Russia is in a state of hybrid war and special operations are underway. All of this requires high costs.

Answering questions from the press about the draft budget for 2024, Mr. Dmitry Peskov affirmed that this draft stipulates an increase in defense spending.

According to the draft budget of the Russian Federation, defense spending in 2024 accounts for 6% of the budget, higher than the 3.9% allocated for 2023. If in 2023, Russia's defense spending is planned at 6,400 billion rubles, then in 2024, this figure is 10,800 billion rubles, equivalent to 112 billion USD.

Previously, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that the country has an obligation to increase spending on defense and national security. This must be done to protect sovereignty.

“Of course, we need to increase funding for weapons purchases, strengthening defense and security. We are obliged to do this,” President Putin said.

According to observers, defense spending includes many items, not just weapons purchases. Other important expenses include military salaries, maintenance costs and soldier training.
