Russian Senator Explains What Will Happen to Ukraine After Tensions in Israel
(Baonghean.vn)- Ukraine's priority in Western politics will decrease amid the escalation in Israel, Russian Senator Alexei Pushkov expressed his opinion on Telegram.
In his opinion, the US will now have to operate on “two fronts” – Ukraine and Israel, otherwise “everyone will be convinced” that the US cannot bear the burden of “global leadership”.
"But no matter how they try to act in both directions, Ukraine's priority in Western policy will inevitably decrease. The Middle East is burning in a really serious way," the Russian senator stressed.
"The United States has taken on too many obligations around the world. This is a typical case of an empire facing countless challenges and increasingly having to stretch itself to demonstrate its power," the senator concluded.
In a related development, the Pentagon is sending an aircraft carrier strike group to the Eastern Mediterranean as a sign of support for Israel amid its ongoing war with Palestinian militants. The fleet is led by the aircraft carrier USS Gerald R. Ford and includes five guided-missile destroyers. US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin announced that Washington will also provide ammunition and other military equipment to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF).
“This enhancement of our joint force posture, in addition to the material support we will provide to Israel promptly, underscores America’s unwavering support for the Israel Defense Forces and the people of Israel,” Mr. Austin affirmed.
President Joe Biden had earlier promised to provide “all appropriate means of support” to Israel, which was hit by a surprise attack by Hamas and other Palestinian groups on the morning of October 7.
Although the IDF has thanked the US for its support, Marwan Bishar, Al Jazeera's chief political analyst, argued that sending a carrier strike group would lead to a "major escalation". "The idea of building up weapons in the Middle East at this time is dangerous," Bishar said.
Militant groups began their assault on the Jewish state by infiltrating Israel from Gaza by land, sea and air. Some 2,500 rockets were fired, killing many Israeli soldiers and civilians. Israel responded with airstrikes on Gaza and redeployed its troops towards the southern border.
