Since October 24, in Vinh city, there have been 5 localities with outbreaks of African swine fever that have not passed 21 days, including: Hung Chinh, Nghi An, Nghi Duc, Nghi Kim, Dong Vinh. Up to now, there are 13 villages and 15 households with pigs infected with African swine fever with the number of pigs destroyed being 132; weighing 7,000 kg.

According to information from the Economic Department of Vinh City People's Committee, samples of sick pigs sent for testing at the Veterinary Department of Region III all tested positive for African swine fever. All outbreaks occurred in small-scale farms.

Faced with the widespread epidemic situation, Vinh City established a Steering Committee for Epidemic Prevention and Control, assigned specialized staff directly to the grassroots level, and coordinated with localities to carry out epidemic prevention and control work. At the same time, chemicals were provided and environmental disinfection spraying was organized. Localities also proactively funded the purchase of lime powder to serve epidemic prevention and control work.

The leader of the Economic Department of Vinh City said: Vinh City currently has nearly 4,000 pigs, mainly raised on a small scale, interspersed among residents. Farmers often use leftover food from restaurants and eateries, uncooked, to feed pigs. On the other hand, the application of biosecurity measures to prevent and control epidemics is still limited.

Worryingly, Vinh City is a place where many national and provincial roads pass through, where trading and commercial activities take place frequently; the slaughtering and transportation of pigs and pork products are still inadequate; coupled with unfavorable weather conditions, the risk of widespread African swine fever occurring in the city in the near future is very high.

Through inspections of some localities, people reported that there was a phenomenon of dumping dead pigs indiscriminately into the environment, despite the local authorities' propaganda and announcements.

It is forecasted that in the coming time, the epidemic situation will continue to be complicated. In addition, prolonged rain makes the disease easily spread and disseminate widely. The People's Committee of Vinh City has issued an official dispatch directing localities to step up epidemic prevention work.

In particular, it is important to promote to farmers the need to comply with the principles of disease prevention and control: feed pigs cooked food, boil water, control the source of food for pigs; spray disinfectants, limit people entering and leaving the barns, and when pigs show signs of illness, immediately notify local authorities and local veterinarians.
