Nghe An Trauma and Orthopedics Hospital successfully reattached the nearly severed ankle of a 43-year-old man.
(Baonghean.vn) - Patient D.D.T., 43 years old (in Huong Son, Ha Tinh) had a work accident while using a lawn mower, causing the right metatarsal to nearly sever. The patient was taken to the Nghe An Trauma and Orthopedic Hospital for emergency treatment and successfully reattached the metatarsal.
"Reviving" a nearly severed foot
On the afternoon of November 27, 2023, Nghe An Trauma and Orthopedics Hospital received patient T. with a near-severed right ankle, about 3 hours after the accident. After assessing the wound, the patient was quickly resuscitated, given fluids, blood transfusions, pain relief, tested, and underwent emergency microsurgery to reconnect the severed ankle.
The surgery lasted more than 4 hours and was successfully performed by a microsurgery team led by Dr. Nguyen Duy Quyet as the main surgeon.

Currently, the patient is conscious, hemodynamically stable, and the severed limb has good blood circulation. The feet and toes are warm and pink, and can move slightly. The patient is being monitored and given special care in the Intensive Care Unit. In the coming time, the patient will have to undergo rehabilitation exercises to regain his previous mobility.

The patient's family shared: "While using the lawn mower, my husband's right ankle was cut by a saw blade, the ankle near the foot was almost severed. When the accident happened, my family was very panicked and thought my husband's leg could not be saved. Luckily, my husband was promptly operated on and treated by doctors and nurses, so his foot was "saved". My family is extremely grateful to the doctors and nurses at Nghe An Trauma and Orthopedics Hospital!"
Hundreds of patients had successful limb reattachment
As a provincial specialized hospital, Nghe An Trauma and Orthopedics Hospital regularly receives cases of severed limbs due to work accidents and domestic accidents and successfully performs many microsurgeries to reconnect limbs for patients.
Microsurgery to reattach blood vessels, nerves, and severed limbs is considered a complex technique, requiring surgeons to have specialized skills, skillful hands, and smooth coordination between specialties.
With a standardized operating room system, modern medical equipment fully meeting the needs of sterile and highly technical surgeries, along with a team of well-trained and experienced professionals, the cases of reattaching severed limbs at Nghe An Trauma and Orthopedics Hospital have a very high success rate.

Nghe An Trauma and Orthopedics Hospital is a pioneer in the province in performing microsurgery to reconnect limbs. Since 2014, the hospital has regularly received and successfully performed surgery on hundreds of cases of severed limbs, restoring motor function to the patients.
BSCKI. Nguyen Duy Quyet recommends: "When an accident causes a limb to be severed, it is necessary to immediately perform first aid to stop the bleeding, take the patient and the severed limb to the nearest medical facility for first aid; then quickly transport the patient to a specialized hospital to reattach the limb. The golden time to "save" the patient's severed limb is before 6 hours, if left longer, the tissues will begin to die; at that time, reattaching the limb will be difficult to succeed"./.
