“Hamas violated the ceasefire and, in addition, opened fire on Israeli territory. The IDF has resumed combat operations against Hamas in the Gaza Strip,” the statement said.

Earlier on December 1, the Israeli military said air raid sirens sounded in residential areas near Gaza and a rocket launch from the enclave was intercepted.

According to TASS, Hamas announced on November 22 that a four-day humanitarian ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip had been reached through the mediation of Qatar and Egypt. The ceasefire in Gaza took effect at 7 a.m. local time on November 24.

Under the agreement, women and teenagers under 19 held in Gaza will be released in exchange for the release of women and teenagers under 19 held in Israeli prisons. On November 27, the sides agreed to extend the truce for two more days, and on the morning of November 30, it was extended for one more day.

Tensions in the Middle East flared up again on October 7 after members of the Hamas force launched a surprise attack on Israeli territory from the Gaza Strip, killing many residents and taking about 240 people, including women, children and the elderly, hostage.

Hamas said its attack was a response to Israeli actions against the Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem's Old City.

Israel has declared a total blockade of Gaza and launched ground operations in the enclave, while carrying out air strikes on targets in the Gaza Strip as well as certain areas in Lebanon and Syria. Clashes are also taking place in the West Bank.
