Chu Viet Thong impersonated a Ho Chi Minh City police officer to commit fraud by asking victims to pay money to "run" for their family members who were being detained to be released on bail.

On January 21, the Investigation Police Agency of District 11 Police (HCMC) issued an emergency arrest warrant for Chu Viet Thong (49 years old, from Hanoi) for the act of "Fraud and appropriation of property".

According to initial information, in December 2023, Chu Viet Thong called Mr. Q.D.C. (50 years old, from Ninh Thuan) claiming to be a Ho Chi Minh City Police officer handling the case of Mr. C.'s biological son (Mr. C.'s biological son was prosecuted and temporarily detained by the Investigation Police Agency of District 11 Police in a case).

Thong told Mr. C. that he could arrange for his son to be released on bail and not be detained. He used fake identification papers to gain Mr. C's trust.

Believing Thong, Mr. C. agreed to meet and transferred money to Thong many times, totaling more than 70 million VND. It is known that Thong used another person's account number to receive money from Mr. C.

After that, Thong turned off his phone and cut off contact with Mr. C. Knowing he had been deceived, Mr. C. reported it to the District 11 Police.

Receiving the report, District 11 Police coordinated with the Criminal Police Department of Ho Chi Minh City Police to investigate and pursue. Recently, the police force arrested Thong.

According to the police, Thong has 3 previous convictions for "Fraudulent appropriation of property". Currently, the District 11 Police Investigation Agency continues to consolidate evidence and expand the investigation.
