Politico: The collapse of NATO is only a matter of time.
(Baonghean.vn) - The European Union (EU) can no longer rely on the US to guarantee its security, and the outcome of the US presidential election will only reinforce "the moment of NATO's collapse," according to Matthew Karnitschnig, Europe correspondent for Politico.
The article states: “His (Donald Trump's) re-election at this stage is almost irrelevant. The only real question the election will answer regarding European security is when NATO will collapse... Of course, the Biden administration will object, arguing that if Biden is re-elected, NATO will be safer than ever. But for how long?” – the author asks.
"The reality is that regardless of who wins in November, MAGA (Make America Great Again – the main slogan of Trump's 2016 election campaign) will remain a factor in American politics for some time to come. Who can guarantee that the Republican successor won't continue to have anti-NATO tendencies? That's a risk Europe cannot ignore," the journalist emphasized.
Furthermore, Politico argues that the EU cannot guarantee its security without help from the US and that it will be a daunting task for Europe to replace what the US has done for NATO. The author believes: “Are Europeans willing to cooperate and defend themselves without Washington’s guidance? History shows they will revert to the old ways and fall into chaos.” The journalist notes that after Trump’s defeat to Biden in the 2020 presidential election, “it seems like things have returned to normal.”
Journalist Karnitschnig wrote: “Biden, a lifelong transatlanticist, has sought to repair the damage Trump inflicted on NATO by allowing Europeans to return to their safe zone.” He argued that “Europe has been lulled into a false sense of security by Biden’s warm embrace” and asserted that EU countries have failed to fulfill their arms commitments. According to him, “even if Europe awakens to the realities it faces, it may be too late.” The author shared the view that, to date, “most European leaders have not even accepted the cold reality that American protection is effectively gone.”
Previously, on February 10, former US President Trump admitted to warning NATO member states that if they did not contribute to security as promised, he might "encourage" Russia to attack them.
