From noon on February 19th (the 10th day of the first lunar month), the Lach Van fishing port in Dien Ngoc commune, Dien Chau district, was bustling with boats, people, and vehicles coming and going to buy fish, especially transporting trays of fresh anchovies from the boats to the shore to sell at a good price. Mr. Tran Van Tu, a fisherman from Dien Ngoc commune, excitedly said:Anchovy seasonStarting from the 12th lunar month, fishing boats operating in waters about 25 nautical miles from shore hit schools of anchovies, catching about 2 tons of fish and earning nearly 30 million VND.
Some local fishermen added that anchovies are fetching good prices this year, ranging from 11,000-12,000 VND/kg, and dried anchovies at 20,000 VND/kg. At these prices, a fishing boat can earn tens of millions of VND after a night of fishing if they are lucky enough to hit a large school of anchovies.
It is known that anchovies are usually sold on the spot to facilities that process them into fish sauce. The anchovy fishing season usually lasts from now until the end of June in the lunar calendar.
During this time, in addition to a bountiful anchovy catch, local fishermen also harvested many other types of seafood such as mackerel, squid, crabs, herring, etc. Most of the fresh fish products, just brought down from the boats, were grilled over charcoal on the spot before being supplied to local markets..
Mr. Nguyen Van Dung, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Dien Ngoc commune, said: Currently, Dien Ngoc commune has more than 252 boats of various sizes, mainly exploiting anchovies, scad, squid, crabs, and lobsters... From the 4th day of Tet (Lunar New Year) until now, fishermen have gone out to sea and achieved high seafood yields, averaging 120 tons of various seafood per day, of which anchovies alone account for 80 tons/day. Anchovies are very easy to sell, with traders coming directly to the fishing port to buy them for steaming and drying to make dried fish and fish sauce.
At the beginning of the new year, fishermen have had a successful anchovy catch, and with good prices, everyone is excited, and fishing fleets are heading out to sea. The coastal fisheries logistics area of Dien Ngoc commune is also actively preparing supplies such as fuel, food, ice, necessities, and transportation services to meet the increased production needs during the most important fishing season of 2024.
