Five family members sentenced for assaulting police

Disagreeing with the bridge construction, 5 family members in An Giang prevented it, using rags soaked in gasoline and boiling water mixed with shrimp paste to attack the task force.

On February 24, Chau Phu District People's Court (An Giang Province) opened the first-instance trial of a case of resisting a person on official duty that occurred in the area.

The defendants in the case include Do Thi Phuong (53 years old), Do Thi Dao (66 years old); Do Thanh Nhan (42 years old), Le Thi Phan (25 years old, all residing in Binh Phu commune, Chau Phu district) and Do Thi Phien (63 years old, residing in Tan Loi commune, Tinh Bien town, An Giang province).

According to the indictment, in 2019, with the permission of Chau Phu District People's Committee, the investor carried out the construction of Canal 12 Bridge on Bac Cay Duong Street (in Binh Quoi Hamlet, Binh Phu Commune).

Canal 12 Bridge was built to serve the general travel needs of the people. However, during the construction process, defendant Do Thi Phuong and her family repeatedly stood up to prevent the construction and demanded compensation.

At about 8:30 a.m. on August 22, 2023, when construction work was carried out in front of defendant Phuong's house, this woman, along with defendants Nhan, Phan (Ms. Phuong's daughter) and other family members stood up to prevent it; took boiling water mixed with shrimp paste and threatened to splash it on the workers.

Upon receiving the news, Binh Phu Commune Police quickly arrived at the scene to maintain order in the area. At this time, defendant Phuong used a rag soaked in burning oil to throw at the construction workers.

The Commune Police asked the defendant Phuong and his family members not to obstruct the construction, but Phan used a ladle to scoop boiling water mixed with shrimp paste and splashed it on the Deputy Chief of Commune Police.

With the persuasion of the district police and local authorities, the defendant Phuong's family did not obstruct the construction. Ms. Phuong was invited to the commune headquarters to work, but this woman did not comply.

Defendant Phuong then told defendant Dao and called defendant Do Thi Phien (defendant Phuong's sister) to come and help prevent the bridge construction and the authorities on duty.

The police force continued to ask the defendants Phuong and Phan to stop obstructing the construction and return to the headquarters to work, but these people not only did not comply but also, together with others, used boiling water mixed with shrimp paste, rags soaked in gasoline and many other objects to attack, injuring many police officers.

The police then made a record of the arrest of the offender and seized many related evidences. The defendant Phuong was burned by the fire.

On August 31, 2023, the defendants Phan, Dao, Phien and Nhan were prosecuted for investigation. On October 27, 2023, the defendant Phuong was prosecuted for investigation.

The panel sentenced the defendants Do Thi Phuong to 3 years and 6 months in prison; Le Thi Phan to 2 years and 6 months in prison; Do Thi Dao, Do Thanh Nhan and Do Thi Phien, each to 2 years in prison, all for the crime of "Resisting a person on official duty".
