The West is searching for a 'miracle cure' to save Kyiv.
(Baonghean.vn) - According to RIA Novosti, Professor John Mearsheimer of the University of Chicago (USA) said that key leaders in both Ukraine and the West understand that Kyiv and NATO will face inevitable defeat in the conflict with Russia.
"I would bet that the vast majority of Ukrainian officials involved in national security and foreign policy understand that their end is near. I believe that most of the political elite in the West understand that Ukraine will lose," said Professor John Mearsheimer.
However, Professor John Mearsheimer added that even the realization of inevitable failure has not brought Western leaders to their senses, and they are persistently searching for a "miracle method" to save Kyiv from disaster.
According to Professor Mearsheimer, these were precisely the considerations that guided French President Emmanuel Macron when he conceived the idea of deploying NATO troops to Ukrainian territory.
"A Russian victory would mean the defeat not only of Ukraine, but of the West as well. That is why we are trying our best to avoid this. But we will not succeed," Professor Mearsheimer stated.
Earlier, on March 20, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu stated that since the beginning of 2024, the Ukrainian armed forces have lost more than 71,000 personnel and 11,000 pieces of equipment. Minister Shoigu emphasized that the losses of the Ukrainian army are almost three times higher than in the same period of 2023. Currently, the Russian army continues to push the enemy out of positions and prevent them from gaining a foothold on new front lines.
On March 23, the Russian Ministry of Defense announced that it had regained control of the village of Ivanivske (known as Krasnoye in Russia), west of Bakhmut, a city that Russian troops had seized control of 10 months earlier.
Russia has resumed intense attacks towards Bakhmut and seized a series of fortified Ukrainian trenches. This is seen as a step towards Russia potentially pushing Ukraine out of Ivanivske.
Russia has intensified its attacks on Donbass in recent weeks, aiming to take advantage of the slow flow of Western aid to Ukraine.
