Former insurance company official jailed for embezzlement
(Baonghean.vn) - As an accountant and cashier of a life insurance company, Trung took advantage of his position and authority to embezzle more than 570 million VND. After 20 years of fleeing abroad, Trung was arrested and had to pay the price for his embezzlement.
On May 22, the People's Court of Nghe An province opened the first instance trial of defendant Hoang Trung (born 1978), residing in Hoa Hieu ward, Thai Hoa town (Nghe An) for the crime of "Embezzlement of property".
Hoang Trung was an accountant and cashier at the Customer Service Department of Region 5, Nghe An Life Insurance Company from August 1, 2002 to February 28, 2003. Trung's duties were to collect money from customers, insurance locations and other revenues; manage and deposit the collected money into the insurance company's account; disburse cash and manage various types of books.
From February 6, 2003 to February 28, 2003, during his work, Trung took advantage of his position and authority to not deposit money into the company account but instead left the money in the unit's safe. From there, Trung appropriated the money he was responsible for managing, causing a loss of more than 570 million VND to Bao Viet Life Insurance Corporation.
With the embezzled money, Trung took 5 million and sent it to his parents, gambled on soccer, and lost part of it.
On March 6, 2003, Hoang Trung fled the area to Thailand and Laos. Afterwards, the police investigation agency decided to prosecute the case, prosecute the accused and issue a wanted notice for Hoang Trung. In October 2023, after 20 years on the run, Trung was arrested by the authorities.
At the trial, the defendant expressed sincere remorse for his crime.
The defendant confessed that after discovering that some of the money he was entrusted to manage was missing, he became worried. He then took the company's money to gamble on football with the intention of making money to make up for the lost money. However, the more he played, the more he lost. After that, out of fear, he fled to Laos.
Before the trial, the defendant had urged his family to compensate the life insurance company for all damages. The company representative who attended the trial asked for a reduced sentence for the defendant.
Considering the case as a whole, the Trial Council sentenced Hoang Trung to 7 years in prison for embezzlement.
