According to RIA Novosti on May 31, US President Joe Biden allowed Ukraine to use US weapons against targets in Russia, threatening the Kharkiv region. However, President Biden still maintained the ban on the use of ATACMS tactical missiles and other long-range firepower weapons.

"President Biden recently directed his officials to allow Ukraine to use US-supplied weapons to counterattack in the Kharkiv region and so that Ukraine can respond to Russian forces," a US official source told RIA Novosti.

At the same time, the US State Department stated that “regulations regarding the prohibition of the use of ATACMS or long-range weapons” against targets in Russia remain in place.

Earlier, the US newspaper Politico quoted an anonymous official as saying that President Biden had secretly authorized Kiev to attack targets in Russia with US weapons “to counterattack in Kharkiv”. According to Politico, that is the territory near the border with the Kharkiv region, and the White House's position on Ukraine's deep attacks on Russian territory is “unchanged”.

In recent days, Western politicians have repeatedly called for the Ukrainian Armed Forces to be allowed to launch attacks on Russian territory with heavy weapons supplied by the West. NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg also made such a call on May 27. According to Mr. Stoltenberg, some allies have lifted such restrictions on Ukraine.
