According to RIA Novosti, in an interview with ARD television channel on June 23, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz admitted that the reputation of the ruling coalition in Germany is declining due to its support for Ukraine and sanctions against Russia.

“It is true that many voters do not agree with our support for Ukraine. They also do not agree that we have imposed sanctions against Russia. But in my opinion, there is an alternative,” said German Chancellor Olaf Scholz.

This was Chancellor Scholz's response to a question about the decline in support for the ruling coalition, especially in eastern Germany, where ahead of elections in several statesAccording to polls, the right-wing Alternative for Germany (AfD) party is leading.

According to Chancellor Scholz, Germany is ready to take advantage of opportunities to develop peace, but “that does not mean Ukraine surrenders”.

Germany is the second largest aid donor to Ukraine, after the United States.

In the recent European Parliament elections, the center-right opposition bloc of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and the Christian Social Union (CSU) won an overwhelming 30% of the vote; the far-right Alternative for Germany party came in second with 15.9%. Meanwhile, Chancellor Scholz's coalition party received its worst result ever, with 13.9% of the vote.
