Nghe An speeds up progress of disaster prevention projects

Taking advantage of favorable weather, localities in Nghe An are currently speeding up the construction of disaster prevention works.

Doi Tuong Reservoir in Quynh Vinh Commune, Hoang Mai Town was built in the 1980s and has the task of irrigating hundreds of hectares of rice fields. However, after many years of exploitation, some construction items have degraded, not ensuring water storage for agricultural production and posing potential safety risks. Repairing and upgrading Doi Tuong Reservoir is very urgent.

Faced with the above situation, from the beginning of 2023 until now, the Doi Tuong reservoir has been invested by the State. Up to now, the construction unit has built over 40% of the volume, including: Repairing the dam body over 600 meters long using the method of embanking the upstream slope, building a new spillway; management house and management and operation road. Currently, the above reservoirs have basically completed flood control works, expected to be put into use by the end of 2025.

Mr. Nguyen Xuan Doan - Vice Chairman of Quynh Vinh Commune People's Committee said: After being put into use, this reservoir will store water for irrigation of over 120 hectares of rice as well as provide domestic water for people, at the same time, improve the climate and ecological environment of the area, ensuring safety for the downstream area of ​​nearly 1,000 households in hamlets 2, 3, 4.

For Nghi Dong reservoir (Nghi Loc), which has been severely damaged for a long time, since the beginning of 2023, the State has supported investment in repairs and upgrades to ensure the safety of the reservoir. Taking advantage of favorable weather, the construction unit has mobilized maximum manpower and machinery for construction.

Up to now, this project has reached over 40% of the volume, currently completing flood-proofing works, such as completing the dam body, completing the water intake culvert, and currently embanking the upstream slope. It is expected that by the end of 2024, the reservoir will be completed. Ensuring irrigation water for hundreds of hectares of rice in Nghi Dong and Nghi Hung communes (Nghi Loc).

At this time, Nam Dan district is implementing the Nam Dan 2 culvert completion project with the goal of preventing landslides on low canal banks, dredging the canal bed to facilitate water storage and drainage. This project has been implemented since 2023, dredging 17 km of canals, embanking 17 km of canal banks, and has so far achieved over 80% of the volume. Right from the recent heavy rains, it has been effective, draining water quite well for Nam Dan district and part of Hung Nguyen district. It is expected that this project will be put into use by the end of 2024.

For the Mo River Dyke Upgrade ProjectThe section through the coastal communes of Quynh Bang, Quynh Luong, Quynh Minh, Quynh Nghia (Quynh Luu) invested by the Department of Planning and Investment of Nghe An province started construction at the end of 2021, with the task of preventing saltwater intrusion into the mainland. By August 2024, it will be completed and put into use, preventing saltwater intrusion for thousands of hectares of agricultural land, while also protecting the safety of more than 4,000 households living close to the sea.

The representative of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development added: Currently, Nghe An is speeding up the progress of projects and works to adapt to climate change, prevent and combat natural disasters. For example, the construction of 4 reservoirs in Nghia Dan and Yen Thanh districts is almost completed, and the site clearance is being carried out to speed up the progress of Khe Lai reservoir, Tan Thang commune, Quynh Luu district, and Mong village reservoir, Quy Hop district. In the near future, other climate change adaptation projects will be upgraded and built, such as the Nghi Quang saltwater intrusion prevention project (Nghi Loc), and Ben Thuy saltwater intrusion prevention project (Vinh city).

Nghe An Provincial People's Committee has also issued a plan to respond to natural disasters in the province in 2024. Along with that, it directed localities to continue investing in infrastructure, consolidating, upgrading, repairing, and overcoming incidents of dikes, dams, and natural disaster prevention and control works. The province assigned localities to balance their own funding sources, prioritizing the repair of weak works to ensure safety during the rainy and stormy season.

In order to gradually prevent and combat natural disasters effectively, Nghe An province is continuing to propose to higher authorities to continue to prioritize the implementation of support for key projects and works on climate change response at the inter-regional and inter-sectoral level.
