After doubling in strength since killing 16 people in the northern Philippines earlier this week, super typhoon Yagi has made landfall along the coast of China's Hainan province.

On September 6, super typhoon Yagi hit Haikou city and Wenchang city in China's Hainan province, bringing strong winds and heavy rain.

According to Reuters news agency, super typhoon Yagi caused widespread power outages, paralyzing Hainan province, known as "China's Hawaii", and forced schools to close and flights over the East Sea to be canceled.

With peak sustained winds of 234 km/h near the center of the storm, Yagi is recorded as the world's second-strongest tropical cyclone since the beginning of 2024, after Category 5 Hurricane Beryl in the Atlantic, and the most severe storm in the Pacific basin this year.

For Hainan, Yagi is the most severe typhoon to hit the province since 2014, when Hainan was hit by Category 5 tropical storm Rammasun, killing 88 people across Hainan, Guangdong, Guangxi and Yunnan and causing economic losses of more than 44 billion yuan ($6.25 billion).

Yagi, which intensified into a super typhoon on the night of September 4, is named after the Japanese word for goat and the constellation Capricorn, a mythical creature that is half goat, half fish.

In Vietnam, storm Yagi is known as storm number 3.
