Quynh Luu dredged the Thai River to promptly drain flood water during the rainy season.
Quynh Luu district focuses on dredging the Thai riverbed to clear the flow to ensure flood drainage and prevent flooding for 8 communes in the district.
At the Thai River section passing through Quynh Hong Commune, Quynh Luu District, the entire river has been dredged and cleared. Ms. Nguyen Thi Tinh in Hong Nguyen Hamlet, Quynh Hong Commune said: The Thai River area used to be filled with silt and mud, and just a heavy rain for a long time would cause the river water to rise and flood the whole house. Now the riverbed has just been dredged, and the water drains quickly after the last few rains without being affected by flooding.
Mr. Le Sy Thanh - The Chairman of the People's Committee of Quynh Hong Commune added: The entire Quynh Hong Commune has over 1,000 households in the two hamlets of Hong Nguyen and Hong Yen, both located along the Thai River, which is at risk of flooding. However, the timely dredging and widening of the Thai River has effectively drained water since the recent rains.
Mr. Nguyen Xuan Dinh - Vice Chairman of Quynh Luu District People's Committee said: Thai River is over 20 km long, responsible for draining floods for 8 communes of Quynh Luu District, however, over the years this drainage system has been silted up, not to mention that many households have encroached on both sides of the river to grow trees and raise aquatic products.
Faced with that situation, in 2024, Quynh Luu district has deployed the project of dredging the Thai riverbed, aiming to clear the flow, unclog the drainage system on the Thai river to ensure flood drainage and prevent flooding for 8 communes in the district including the communes: Quynh Hong, Quynh Giang, Quynh Dien, Quynh Hung, Quynh Lam, Ngoc Son, Quynh Hong, Cau Giat town.
Scale, dredging, widening Thai river with a length of over 1.6 km, starting point at Dao river sluice in block 4, Cau Giat town, ending point in Quynh Dien commune. Dredging, widening Thai river with a width of 20-25 meters, depth of about 2.5-3 meters. Using dredged soil on site to fill and shape the dike (for some locations without dikes) with a dike crest elevation of 3 meters.
Up to now, this project has reached 100% volume. In particular, the recent heavy rains have drained the water quite well, people living along the Thai River have not been flooded like in previous years.
To ensure the project is effective in flood drainage, the district directs communes to regularly monitor, propagate, and mobilize people not to encroach on land on both sides of the Thai River to plant trees and raise aquatic products, causing blockage of the flow.
According to the plan in 2025, the district will continue to combine capital sources to dredge other sediment drainage canals such as Phu Si canal in Quynh Hau and Quynh Thach communes, and Ben Hai drainage canal in Quynh Thanh commune.
