This year, World Contraception Day is held under the theme “Young people should take responsibility for safe sex and proactive contraception for their own happiness and for the future of the country”. The theme aims to arouse the responsibility of young people for safe sex and proactive contraception. At the same time, it encourages people to be proactive in their pregnancy behavior for the benefit of themselves and the community.
At the launching ceremony, Mr. Nguyen Van Thuong - Deputy Director of the Department of Health highly appreciated the efforts of the whole sector in responding to World Contraception Day. However, the leaders of the health sector also pointed out the difficulties and challenges of the population sector. Nghe An is entering a new phase when Nghe An is a province with a large population, ranking 4th in the country, the birth rate andthird child birth ratestill high. The gender imbalance at birth is at an alarming level. Population quality still has many limitations; The number of women of childbearing age suffering from reproductive tract infections is still high.

In addition, early sexual intercourse, unsafe sex, unwanted pregnancy and abortion are still occurring; the risk of sexually transmitted diseases among adolescents/young adults still exists.
More dangerously, many teenagers do not dare to go to medical facilities and instead have illegal abortions, which do not ensure sterility and can cause infection, bleeding, obstetric complications... After marriage, they are unable to conceive naturally, and the infertility rate is often 3-4 times higher than for those without a history of abortion.
According to a report by the United Nations Population Fund, Vietnam is among the 20 countries with the highest rate of teenage abortions in the world, with about 300,000 cases per year. Of these, 30% are women aged 15-19, with 70% being students.
In Vietnam, according to statistics from the Family Planning Association, each year there are 1.2 - 1.6 million abortions nationwide, of which 20% are among minors. Some are even only 12 - 13 years old, a time when their bodies are not yet fully developed physically.
In response to World Contraception Day 2024, the leaders of the Department of Health requested that Party committees at all levels, authorities, departments, branches and organizations continue to pay attention to leading and directing population work in the new situation.
On the part of the health sector at all levels, it is necessary to be proactive and decisive in consulting and implementing activities. Continue to consolidate, improve, expand and develop the network of family planning service providers, diversify the services.contraception, especially modern contraceptive methods, so that all people of childbearing age have convenient and safe access.
