Proposing the US to coordinate in soon recognizing Vietnam's market economy status

General Secretary and President To Lam hopes that the two countries will continue to actively implement the Joint Statement on upgrading relations in 2023, especially the US will continue to exchange and coordinate to soon recognize Vietnam's market economy status.

On September 25 local time (September 25 evening Vietnam time), in New York (USA), General Secretary and President To Lam received Senator Chris Coons, a Democrat, Chairman of the Subcommittee on Foreign Affairs, Foreign Operations and Related Programs (Appropriations Committee), Chairman of the Subcommittee on Intellectual Property (Judiciary Committee), and also Chairman of the Special Committee on Ethics and member of the Foreign Affairs Committee, US Congress.

At the meeting, General Secretary and President To Lam shared his assessment of the special relationship between Vietnam and the US, considering it a model of efforts to mend and build post-war relations. With the upgrading of relations to Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, Vietnam-US relations have truly entered a new page.

For the relationship between the two countries to reach the level it has today, Vietnam greatly appreciates the great contributions of the US Congress as well as “icebreakers” such as the late Senator John McCain, Senator Patrick Leahy, Senator John Kerry… in mending and promoting the relationship between the two countries.

The General Secretary and President affirmedVietnam is always consistent with its foreign policy.Independence, self-reliance, multilateralization, diversification, being a friend, reliable partner, active and responsible member of the international community; especially attaching importance to Vietnam's development goals and growth in the new era.

The General Secretary and President was pleased to acknowledge the positive results in implementing the Vietnam-US Comprehensive Strategic Partnership framework over the past year and hoped that the US Congress would continue to support the strong and stable development of the new partnership framework.

Looking forward to the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries in 2025, the General Secretary and President hopes that the two countries will continue to actively and effectively implement the Joint Statement on upgrading relations in 2023, especially the US will continue to exchange and coordinate to soon recognize Vietnam's market economy status.

The two countries need to cooperate closely and make active and responsible contributions to the common work of the international community and respond to global issues.

Senator Chris Coons affirmed that he considers Vietnam a leading partner in the region and is interested in strengthening the relationship between the two countries.

Senator Chris Coons shared his joy at the upgrading of relations to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and the substantial progress achieved in implementation over the past time, including increased exchanges and contacts between the legislative bodies of the two countries.

This is an important basis for the two sides to strengthen mutual understanding and promote cooperation in all channels and fields, including new potential fields such as clean energy, liquefied natural gas (LNG), digital transformation, high technology, environment, climate change response, etc.

The Senator emphasized that in his position, he will continue to promote the implementation of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership; promote the traditions left by previous generations of senators, especially in cooperation to overcome the consequences of war.

Also on September 25, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Bui Thanh Son met with US Deputy National Security Advisor Jonathan Finer.

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Bui Thanh Son stated that Vietnam considers the US a partner of strategic importance and wishes to continue, together with the US, to deepen the bilateral relationship in an effective, stable and sustainable manner on the basis of respecting independence, sovereignty and the fundamental principles of bilateral relations.

The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister suggested that the National Security Council and relevant agencies of the two sides closely coordinate to prepare for activities to celebrate the 30th anniversary of diplomatic relations in 2025; promote economic-trade-investment, science-technology and innovation cooperation, as well as other areas of cooperation within the framework of the new relationship.

Deputy National Security Advisor Jonathan Finer acknowledged and appreciated the comments of Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Bui Thanh Son. Mr. Jonathan Finer reaffirmed the administration's strong support for promoting the Vietnam-US Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, consistently supporting a strong, independent, self-reliant and prosperous Vietnam.

Mr. Jonathan Finer also agreed and said that the US will continue to pay attention to devoting resources to support Vietnam in overcoming the consequences of war, high-tech cooperation, and developing high-quality human resources...

The two sides also discussed international and regional issues of mutual concern, including Mekong cooperation and climate change response, and agreed on the importance of maintaining peace, security, stability, and freedom of navigation and aviation in the East Sea.
